Israel’s latest attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla constitutes another violation of international law

Front Line Defenders strongly condemns the Israeli naval forces' military interception of the peaceful Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which took place in international waters on the evening of 18 May 2026, approximately 250 nautical miles (450 kilometres) from the coast of Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is a coordinated, independent, non-violent fleet of mostly small vessels sailing from ports across the Mediterranean to Gaza. GSF’s mission is to challenge the ongoing blockade imposed on Gaza and establish a humanitarian corridor for civilians amid the worsening humanitarian crisis. Among the crew members are international human rights defenders, medical personnel, journalists, humanitarian volunteers, and solidarity activists from several countries.

On 14 May 2026, the flotilla departed from Marmaris, Türkiye, comprising 54 civilian vessels. On 18 May 2026, reports indicated that Israeli forces intercepted several vessels and detained their crew members. At the time of publication, there is limited information regarding the whereabouts, legal status, and health conditions of those detained. Israeli media and official statements issued prior to the interception announced plans to seize the vessels and transfer participants to detention facilities upon their arrival at the Port of Ashdod.

This interception follows a similar operation on 30 April 2026, when Israeli naval forces intercepted several flotilla vessels near Crete, Greece, carrying approximately 175 activists. While most of them were released, the activists Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek were detained incommunicado for two days before being transferred to the Israeli detention facility Shikma in Ashkelon. On 5 May 2026, an Israeli Magistrates’ Court extended their detention for six additional days, in part based on secret evidence not disclosed to the activists or their lawyers. The Court also approved the full interrogation period requested by the authorities without imposing limitations on the detention conditions. Both activists were released and deported on 10 May 2026.

Several activists that were detained during the interception on 30 April 2026 reported experiencing physical violence and ill-treatment during their detention, and required medical treatment following their release.

Front Line Defenders expresses deep concern regarding these interceptions of peaceful civilian solidarity missions, as well as the detention and interrogation of human rights defenders. The organisation calls for the immediate and safe release of all detained human rights defenders, humanitarian actors, and solidarity activists of the GSF, as well as the return of all seized vessels. It is imperative that those detained are granted immediate access to legal representation, medical care, and consular support, and that their physical and psychological integrity is fully protected. Front Line Defenders further calls on the international community, particularly EU member states, to intervene urgently to guarantee the safety and protection of all members of the GSF, to closely monitor the situation, and to ensure compliance with international human rights, humanitarian, and maritime law.
